The Top IT Initiatives for DSAG Members

by Dr. Marco Lenck | SAPinsider

July 1, 2013

While new technology trends and innovations are exciting, many customers are still yearning for information on how to support their existing investments. Always cognizant of its members’ needs, DSAG recently conducted its 10th annual DSAG investment survey with more than 360 CIOs, directors, and other representatives answering questions about SAP solutions they are currently using and their planned investments for the future. Read this article to get a detailed look at the survey’s findings.

As technology advances at a breathtaking pace, we hear a lot about the newest available innovations. However, while customers are certainly interested in these newer topics, they’re also still hungry for information on how to support their existing investments. The German-Speaking SAP User Group (DSAG) makes it a point to keep up to date on its members’ investment plans and interests to ensure that the topics discussed with SAP representatives are in line with their members’ wants and needs.

As part of this initiative, DSAG conducted its 10th annual DSAG investment survey in December and January. More than 360 CIOs, directors, and other representatives from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland participated, answering questions about SAP solutions they are currently using and their planned investments for the future. Let’s take a look at some of the results.

IT Spend Is Growing

Though economic troubles continue to disrupt businesses around the world, IT spend in general has actually nearly doubled. Survey respondents say they plan to increase spending by 5.9%, up from 3.4% last year. SAP-related expenditures are also growing dramatically. Respondents say they plan to invest 11.2% more of their budget on SAP solutions, up from 7.6% last year.

There are three areas specifically that are at the forefront of DSAG members’ minds: logistics (with 40% of those surveyed planning to invest in this area), accounting (24%), and SAP ERP (20%). Users are focusing on investing in these more traditional areas, with the main focus being on process improvement investments (for consulting services, for example).

An Uptick in Mobile, Cloud, and SAP HANA Interest

It’s also been interesting (and exciting!) to see how DSAG members plan to invest in newer SAP innovations:

  • 62% of participants cited interest in mobilizing their businesses — creating a significant lead among popular innovation-related topics. Decision makers have exhibited a burning interest in making their business processes mobile.
  • Interest in cloud has also gained momentum, with 25% of participants stating that cloud solutions are relevant to their business (a large jump from last year’s 5%). Furthermore, 11% of respondents plan to increase their focus on cloud computing in the next 12 months.
  • About 20% of those surveyed consider in-memory technology relevant to their business and believe it will become important over the coming year. However, it should be noted that much of this investment survey was conducted before the announcement about SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA — a development that can change the way customers interact with their core applications and processes. DSAG expects to see a shift in customers’ in-memory plans as they continue to explore this topic and assess SAP HANA use cases.

Helping Members Meet Their Goals

As a result of this survey, DSAG has established an initiative to work with its members to discuss their experiences with new technologies and processes. This information will also be helpful for planning the annual DSAG congress. To learn more, visit www.dsag.de
