How to Navigate a Successful Cloud Journey

Embracing a Hybrid Environment with SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud

by Mark Oakey | SAPinsider, Volume 16, Issue 3

July 1, 2015

In this column, SAP’s Mark Oakey walks through the steps to build a cloud roadmap. He explains where to start, why SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud is an optimal springboard to the cloud, and the benefits of SAP Business Suite 4 SAP HANA (SAP S/4HANA).

For many organizations, a move to the cloud can seem like a balancing act. Organizations must weigh benefits such as speed to innovation, agility, scalability, and simplification against the need for integration, governance, and security. Defining a cloud roadmap requires decisions such as:

  • What stays on premise?
  • What moves to the cloud?
  • How do we manage customizations, integration, security, and risk?
  • How do we balance governance and innovation?

That’s a lot to keep in mind — but the degree of difficulty can be reduced with the right tools and solutions. SAP has just such a cloud portfolio, offering solutions and services that can meet companies’ needs at any stage in their cloud journey.

For many organizations eager to bring the benefits of SAP HANA to their business, SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud is the optimal springboard to the cloud.

Starting Anywhere

Most organizations invest a great deal to maintain and customize their IT landscapes to meet their unique business needs. Today, nearly every organization has some level of cloud presence, typically for customer relationship management (CRM), human capital management (HCM), or procurement. So, the question we hear most often from customers is not how to make their first foray into the cloud, but rather how to design a comprehensive enterprise cloud strategy that:

  • Protects existing investments
  • Accelerates innovation
  • Keeps an organization’s unique business processes intact

Moving to the cloud does not mean breaking off some parts of the business in a piecemeal fashion or taking a rip-and-replace approach. Most organizations are defining a hybrid model, where they choose what remains on premise and what runs in the cloud. In this hybrid model, integration is paramount. SAP customers can leverage the tools available in SAP HANA Cloud Platform to integrate on-premise applications quickly and seamlessly with other SAP and non-SAP applications in the cloud, without extensive coding. This integration as a service integrates business processes and data in a secure and reliable environment.

Bridging the Gap

So, how do you strike the right balance while navigating from point A to point B? For many organizations eager to bring the benefits of SAP HANA to their business, SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud is the optimal springboard to the cloud (see Figure 1). Companies can run their SAP applications and choose how those applications are managed in a scalable and secure environment. With application management services (AMS) for SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud, companies can tailor their private managed cloud experience to match their business needs.

The Journey to SAP S/4HANA

With the introduction of SAP Business Suite 4 SAP HANA (SAP S/4HANA), SAP delivers the next wave of simplification with a streamlined core of the most essential scenarios, including finance, accounting, procurement, and manufacturing. SAP S/4HANA allows SAP to deliver ongoing innovation with minimal disruption. SAP S/4HANA can also integrate with other SAP cloud solutions, including ones from SAP companies SuccessFactors, Ariba, and Concur. In this environment, organizations can consume the latest innovations in a standardized, scalable way.

SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud offers an attractive option for organizations that are eager to experience these benefits but are not yet prepared to make the move. SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud can be your bridge to SAP S/4HANA by providing a secure, managed service environment that allows companies to standardize their processes and utilize the extraction layer in SAP HANA Cloud Platform to manage extensions and customizations.

The hybrid model is a reality for innovative enterprises moving to the cloud, and SAP has the breadth of products and services to support the journey regardless of the path these enterprises choose.
