The Roadmap for Continuous Mobile Innovation

by Rick Costanzo | SAPinsider, Volume 16, Issue 3

July 14, 2015

It’s become clear that today’s world is a mobile one. Successful companies must develop a clear and effective strategy to build a mobile platform that supports the entire business. Learn how to mobilize your business both on premise and in the cloud.

Consumers spend more time than ever on mobile devices. As with many technology trends, this fact is not limited to what people are doing with their free time; it is greatly influencing how employees use technology at work. No longer is it acceptable for system access to be sparing or reports to be run only when a user is signed on to the office network — information must be available on the go in real time. This access must be simple, intuitive, and user friendly.

To stay in step with these demands, companies must be able to develop and deliver on a clear, effective mobile strategy. Enterprises can’t just roll out a mobile app and hope for the best; it is imperative that they have a strong mobile platform that aligns with their overarching strategy and supports the entire business. SAP’s mobile offerings — including SAP Mobile Platform for on-premise deployments and SAP HANA Cloud Platform mobile services for cloud deployments — exist as extensions of SAP’s core products and roadmap, a key shift from the traditional approach to mobility as a standalone offering and strategy.

With a renewed focus on security and cohesion rather than on divergent technologies, SAP offers a consistent and disciplined way to securely mobilize all business processes and content — whether on premise or in the cloud.

Mobile Development on Premise and in the Cloud

SAP’s mobile offerings provide the breadth and depth of functionality to tackle an organization’s mobile needs. SAP Mobile Platform is an on-premise development platform for building and deploying mobile apps — as well as integrating with the company’s SAP and non-SAP systems. With SAP Mobile Platform, users can securely connect via personal or corporate devices, allowing them to access data on the go.

Turning the focus to the cloud, SAP HANA Cloud Platform is a cloud-based, SAP HANA-enabled platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offering, allowing organizations to benefit from the data processing power of SAP HANA and the convenience of the cloud while avoiding the hassle of hosting any applications on premise. SAP HANA powers real-time data processing, giving users better access to information and producing insights that lead to better decision making.

While these capabilities offer many benefits, what was missing was the security, application management, and integration benefits of SAP Mobile Platform. SAP HANA Cloud Platform mobile services extends the capabilities of SAP Mobile Platform into the cloud and provides third-party developers with a state-of-the-art open source platform to deliver high-end services for their applications. SAP HANA Cloud Platform mobile services also shares the same codeline and software development kit (SDK) as SAP Mobile Platform, so users of either offering will be able to use the apps they develop across both on-premise and cloud systems.

SAP developed these offerings to cover all customer needs and enable integration across disparate systems and deployments. No matter your industry, landscape, or existing technologies, SAP’s mobile technology can help connect users to data and provide the information people need, when and where they want it.

Innovation Without Interruption

Whether apps are designed for a tablet, smartphone, or laptop environment, a key benefit of SAP HANA Cloud Platform mobile services is that there is no need to rewrite the application; developers can write once and run on any environment. This saves considerable time and resources, leading to uninterrupted innovation, higher levels of productivity, and a happier and more productive development team — not to mention greater profitability for the enterprise.

Innovation without interruption is only possible by accepting that organizations have a mix of SAP and non-SAP applications, so embracing open standards such as OData is in line with the open standards of SAP HANA Cloud Platform. With OData as a standards-based connectivity mechanism, customers can run SAP or non-SAP systems on the backend, and securely mobilize and extend any enterprise content or process.

In addition, mobility will play a prominent role in how customers experience the simplicity that the next-generation SAP Business Suite 4 SAP HANA (SAP S/4HANA) delivers. Users enjoy a responsive, personalized experience with SAP Fiori, and can access real-time information on any device at any time. Instant insight means not having to wait until morning to boot up an office PC, so mobile integration with SAP S/4HANA through SAP HANA Cloud Platform mobile services is crucial to ensuring that customers capitalize fully on the powerful simplicity of SAP S/4HANA.

Putting Mobility to Work

SAP customers large and small have seen tremendous gains by mobilizing their enterprises. One Fortune 100 company has pushed out a mobile application that extends business processes to more than 290,000 employees. But it is not just massive, global companies that benefit: A midsize bakery plagued by a paper-based system for taking orders came to SAP looking for a more modern approach. SAP collaborated with a partner to produce a mobile application off of SAP HANA Cloud Platform that works online and offline, through the capabilities of SAP HANA Cloud Platform mobile services, and includes security and backend integration as well. The app pushed all the data to users’ tablets and smartphones, giving them the ability to securely and quickly add and edit new customers and update orders. By eliminating paper, the company expects to see a reduction in errors along with quicker and more effective customer service.

This example of complete integration — application creation, connectivity, security, mobile services, and publication, all from the same platform — shows the comprehensive nature of SAP’s mobile offerings.

A Roadmap for Integrated Mobility

SAP is focused on networks, applications, and platforms — with SAP HANA at the center. In its nascent form, SAP HANA was intended primarily as a vehicle for the enterprise to optimize applications on top of a state-of-the-art in-memory database. Today, with SAP S/4HANA and SAP HANA Cloud Platform as parts of the foundational strategy, the real story of SAP HANA is now being told: It is about a unified and integrated business suite without built-in aggregates or indices, and one that brings analytics directly into the transactional system of record.

It is also about a powerful, cohesive platform where customers can quickly write native and innovative applications because the redundancies have been stripped away, resulting in a much easier path to high performance. And because these applications can be securely extended to a mobile environment, people can take the actual benefit of that real-time analytical insight wherever and whenever they want. These productivity benefits, as well as the cost savings that mobility has always promised the enterprise, have never been easier to achieve than they are now with SAP HANA Cloud Platform mobile services. It’s the consistent, disciplined way to realize innovation, productivity gains, and cost savings without disruption.

The next step for the customer is to use the analytical insights they glean to learn more about their business and then act on that knowledge. Customers can gain additional value with the help of partners, who by helping customers create mobile apps on SAP HANA Cloud Platform or extending existing functionality into true mobile experiences, can become invaluable to customers’ efforts to achieve innovation.
