Portfolio and Project Management: New Solutions from SAP

by Kristin Bent

April 22, 2010

The "News & Events" section on today provides an overview of SAP Portfolio and Project Management 5.0 - an application, new to SAP PLM, that will allow organizations to more efficiently manage and execute their SAP projects.

In addition to the fact that this new application was announced at our very own PLM 2010 event in Milan (glad to hear things are going smoothly after all your volcanic mishaps, guys!), this article caught my eye for another reason. SAP Portfolio and Project Management 5.0 will not only help customers better plan and manage their project initiatives - but will provide a greater means to do so on time and within budget.

The focus of my last blog post was on my research efforts, so far, for the Managing your SAP Projects event this October. One of the major trends I've noticed - in addition to the significant interest in project methodologies and tools  - is how to better manage project timelines, resources, and (sometimes-smaller-than-hoped-for) budgets.

I wonder, then, how the introduction of SAP Portfolio and Project Management 5.0 will change the face of timeline, resource and budget management within SAP projects. As the announcement of this solution is still so recent, I'm trying my best to dig a bit and learn more.

Do any fellow Insider Learning Network folks have insight into this solution, and the role it will play in the future of SAP project management? If so, please chime in!

My curiosity is growing with every Google search :)

I'll be sure to keep you posted on any new findings on my end.

Until then!

Hey Kristin,

I don't have any special insight into this, but I am curious about how PM 5.0 is designed to work with SAP Solution Manager. There are a number of project management tools in SolMan, and I wonder how they might be leveraged in tandem with this tool. If I find out more I'll let you know.
