Some Things Never Change

Change is constant is our dynamic industry. I started working with the company that produces this blog, the HR Expert Magazine, SPJ and the SAP HR conferences back in the 1990s. During that time, I have seen SAP evolve from version 3.0F through their newest ECC 6.0 version. Remember when there used to be HR, PA and PD? HR is now HCM, PD has been replaced by OM, and BW seems to change almost daily. All of these changing acronyms and references can be very confusing—even for SAP experts! Today’s blog has been created to explain those changes so you can keep pace with the latest developments.

Being familiar with new terms for SAP modules and the umbrellas which they fall under—Recruitment is now part of Talent Management—will be a requirement for anyone working in SAP Human Capital Management (HCM). Let’s start with the three families of HCM components: Workforce Management, Talent Management and Workforce Deployment. These components, partnered with SAP components for End User Service Delivery (ex: ESS and MSS), and Workforce Analytics as depicted in the table in Figure 1, make the suite of the SAP HCM solution.

The one thing that has remained the same during the multiple SAP and HCM variations is my profile picture. I’ve used the same one for over 10 years now. I’ve convinced myself that I’ve done this to provide some stability for our readers amongst SAP’s continually changing landscapes. I’m sure it has nothing at all to do with me denying the continual forward march of Father Time. :)
