A mobile story well worth telling

When I first spoke with Dave Ploch, I liked him. He’s the CIO of Novus International and a very likeable, down-to-earth guy with a great sense of humor. And like a fair amount of the people I interview, when we first started talking, he wasn’t sure his “story” would be all that interesting to the readers of insiderPROFILES. (Of course, I knew he did have an interesting story to tell and that’s why I was interviewing him).

As you can read about here in the latest issue of insiderPROFILES, Novus’ IT organization is probably at the point many of yours are – their company dipped its toe in the mobile ocean and found it’s not so chilly after all. In fact, they’re ready to take a long swim and Ploch and his IT cohorts are the lifeguards. (I’m over-using metaphors again).

The development and launch of its first mobile app has created an IT buzz at Novus. And Ploch sees his role as helping figure out how to capitalize on the “buzz” without getting “stung.” (There I go again with the metaphors). Everyone and their brother has a great mobile idea these days and, as Ploch puts it, “I hate to be the IT guy that always says no.” But there are lot of ways to go in mobile IT – internally and externally and there are only so many resources in a company and the opportunities and ideas have to be evaluated and prioritized based on their value to the business.

I think Novus un der Ploch’s watchful eye is a good example of how to strike a balance and be strategic without missing a good opportunity in mobile. And I think their “story” will resonate with many of you who are dipping your toe in the mobile waters.
