Tips to More Efficiently Implement, Optimize, and Go-Live with ChaRM

A sound change management strategy is a must for every successful SAP project, and leveraging the ChaRM functionality within SAP Solution Manager is a guaranteed step in the right direction. But how do you efficiently get the tool up and running within your own organization? Here are a few proven tricks for implementing (and optimizing) ChaRM:

  1. To set the foundation for a smooth ChaRM implementation, remember:
    1. Establish a landscape that provides a prototype environment for proof-of-concept (PoC) and testing activities
    2. To support synchronization between a SAP Solution Manager development system and a follow-on production system
    3. To support a smooth and seamless integration for additional systems that fall into scope for ChaRM
    4. Keeping a two-tier landscape in synch is critical, especially after ChaRM has gone live

  1. Be sure to align the right resources when using the tool:
    1. It’s not all about Basis in regards to transport management, and change/release management procedures
    2. Core team members are vital during the design, play-back, and final sign-off of a ChaRM solution
    3. The roles during implementation eventually evolve into support roles once ChaRM becomes live for your support landscape
    4. You must identify one resource who will provide administration support for SAP Solution Manager maintenance post go-live

  1. In the realizatio n phase, ensure RFC connections and security authorizations are properly maintained:
    1. Incorrectly maintained RFC connections and/or security authorizations will result in:
    2. Transports not released or imported
    3. Login screens where a seamless transition should occur
    4. Erroneous errors
    5. Short dumps
    6. Automated tools to generate RFC connections are available
    7. There are restrictions if a CUA is established on your SAP Solution Manager system
