Using complementary SAP technologies to integrate business rules and processes

by Scott Priest, Editorial Director

February 14, 2011

Integration is a key point for any company running multiple systems, even ones that natively complement one another. In his latest SAP Professional Journal article, "Integrate Business Rules in Collaborative Business Processes," Volker Stiehl details the integration of two complementary parts of SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment: SAP NetWeaver Business Rules Management (SAP NetWeaver BRM) and SAP NetWeaver Business Process Management (SAP NetWeaver BPM).

SAP NetWeaver BRM is focused on business logic: if-then-else rules and decision tables. On the other hand, SAP NetWeaver BPM is concerned with the modeling and execution of business processes.

Volker's main goal in the article is to integrate business rules into business process models, thus combining rule-based business logic with the collaborative nature of a business process.

He details that the best way to do this is not through Web services or a gateway, but through a mapping activity.
