Creating an enterprise mobility strategy: Tip from BI 2011

SAP mobile solutions give us the ability to make better business decisions, any where, any time. Now, with the ability to incorporate dashboarding and reporting tools -- like Xcelsius and SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence -- the ROI of mobility is more clear than ever.

But, with so much to choose from, where do you begin? How do you jumpstart an overall enterprise mobility strategy, to allow for this valuable, on-the-go business insight? In his BI 2011 presenation, Executive session: Best practices to drive value and innovation with business mobility solutions, Dr. Ahmed El Adl, Vice President of Enterprise Mobility at SAP America, offers proven strategies for building and optimizing your own mobile strategy:

Your mobility strategy should define:

1. How, when, and where to deploy mobile apps
2. Which user groups need specific mobile devices, services, and applications
3. How mobile devices and services will be secured and managed
4. How mobility standards and adoption will be governed 

Major principles of a mobility strategy: 

1. Flexibility: Will accommodate fast evolving mobile technologies

2. Diversity: Include a manageable diversity of data sources and devices

3. Security: Security s hould never be an afterthought in business mobility

4. Scalability: Scalable to accommodate for business growth

5. Sustainability: Help in providing sustainable business value

6. Manageability: Insure manageable adoption of mobility technology with low risk

Where to start: Mobility profile framework: 

Creating a mobile profile framework will ensure that mobile users:

1. Get the right mobile solution(s)

2. Receive adequate support to work effectively

3. Have the required mobile devices and peripherals

4. Have the right communication type, bandwidth, and data/voice plan

5. Get the right security policy for device(s) and data

6. Are provided with adequate training and support

From a security standpoint, here are a few tips Dr. Ahmed El Adl offers for protecting sensitive business data in a mobile environment:

Mobile Security Management Framework:

1. Implement, enforce, and periodically update an adequate mobile security policy

2. Use appropriate tools to proactively discover mobile devices on the network to be able to enforce the appropriate security policies, the required authentication, and authorization

3. Consider separating personal data from corporate data

4. Mobile information security is a collective responsibility of the overall organization

5. Communicate the approved security rules and guidelines and make them available mobile and online
