When did you realize you were a geek?
For me, that moment of harsh realization came in two parts:
The first part occurred last year when Watson — the IBM question-answering supercomputer — competed in a two-game series on Jeopardy!, in a truly fascinating and slightly humiliating (to the human race in general) human-versus-machine match-up. Watson destroyed the humans, proving that machines may in fact one day take over the world, in a horrifying Terminator-like fashion. Needless to say, it was the most-anticipated night of television for me that week (debatably the entire month, though I cringe at this in embarrassing hindsight).
The second happened today, when I “met” Watson in the IBM Lounge at the SAP BI (#BI2012) conference in Vegas. I was so excited, you’d think I was meeting a celebrity — or at the very least an actual human.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around which disturbs me the most: The fact that I’ve now accepted the fact that I’m a true geek, or that I denied this looming reality for so long.
