Mobile Tip #4: Guidelines for developing an effective and flexible mobile strategy

What are best practices for setting mobile strategy? 

This is the topic from the session, “Mobile Infrastructure Management Simplified with SAP Afaria™” to be presented by Paul A. Horan – SAP Global Mobility SWAT at the upcoming Enterprise Mobility Conference 2012, October 29-31 in Las Vegas.

This excerpt highlights two of the session's Top 5 considerations when developing an effective - and flexible - mobile strategy:

#1: Plan to support a wide variety of devices


  • Minimum requirement is v2.3 (Gingerbread)
  • Supported through v4.04 (Ice Cream Sand.)
  • Afaria AES available on Samsung devices

Apple iOS6

  • Full support for existing functionality is currently available
  • iOS 6 new feature support due in an upcoming Feature Pack release to 7.01

Microsoft (Win32/64 + WinMo)

  • WinMo Std/Pro v5.0 thru 6.5.x
  • WinCE 4.1, 4.2, 5.0
  • Windows 7 (64/32bit), Vista, XP
  • Windows Server 2003, 2008 (64/32bit)

RIM Blackberry

  • Blackberry v5, v6, v7 supported
  • <
  • Blackberry v10
  • Complete revision, based on the QNX kernel
  • Scheduled for release in Q1/2013
  • Afaria support: TBD…

#2: Implement “Policy and Profile-based” management

Enrollment policies

  • Place devices into appropriate policy groups based on AD/LDAP roles and device type

Device Configuration

  • Wi-fi SSIDs, Certificate deployment, VPN setup
  • Enable/disable device peripherals, iCloud usage, Application white/blacklisting
  • Provision the corporate email account (Exchange/Notes) to the device

Application policies

  • Policy based deployment/removal of both Enterprise and App Store/Google Play app

Email Access policies

  • Restrict or wipe corporate email for policy violations

Jailbreak/Rooted status

Removal of Afaria client or MDM profile

Presence of software applications that are deemed “not compliant
