Key considerations for implementing an enterprise information governance strategy

If you ask around your company for perceptions of information governance, you may hear the following things:

  • What? What is that?
  • Sounds like a lot of paper pushing to me.
  • The processes take forever!
  • We don’t need that. We’re still shipping product and collecting money, so how bad could it be?
  • I think we had someone come in and do a loooooooong (and expensive) assessment, but nothing much has changed. 

Let me help you stop some of the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt).

  • Information governance is not a tool set. It is not a process. It is not a committee with long meetings. No. Information governance is a discipline that includes people, processes, policies, and metrics for the oversight of enterprise information to improve the business value.
  • You are not done, and you are probably not good enough. Your employees are very good at creative workarounds when they don’t get the information they need. All kinds of shadow information processes spring up. The problem is that these processes cost you money. Check out some of the statistics in the information governance infographic.
  • The rest of the comments revolve around the perception that information governance is very bureaucratic and heavy. It shouldn’t be. There are plenty of ways to make your governance process both high value-add, and still help optimize the business process.
