Those of you unfamiliar with cloud computing should check out an easy-to-read overview as part of our premium content at CRM Expert.

The article made me ponder other on-demand or Web-based services and why people didn’t refer to them as “cloud” applications. For example:

- Cloud-e-commerce—For CRM devotees, a new, moody vibe for the online store

- Cloud with a SAPPHIRE lining—An idea to retool the name of the virtual component of SAP’s annual customer conference, which is going on right now in Orlando

- Cloud channel—This sounds much more pleasant than the typical “video on-demand” moniker attached to programs that you can watch at your leisure on digital cable or the Web.

- Cloud Mine®—Some lucky company will register this name when all customers start settin g up personal cloud accounts, following the success of smart phones and social sites

On the other hand, it’s best to avoid any business relationship with the volcanic ash cloud.
