During a packed SAP Systems in the Cloud session at SAP TechEd, our substitute speaker Brian ably stepped in and presented some of the projects SAP has on the horizon (so to speak). The first point of the session is that no one UI is the ideal UI to the cloud — different UIs work for different needs. Then the session continued with several example UIs.
A pilot program, Project Silver is SAP’s marketplace for cloud-based business user solutions. The SAP Cloud Marketplace give you instant access to preconfigured, pre-installed SAP applications in the cloud. An example was given with SAP Business All-in-One in which you answer a few questions so that you have an application that is tailored to your needs. You select the systems you want to use within SAP Business All-in-One.
Using an example of virtual infrastructure management, Brian explained that SAP has been using an internal cloud system to manage an infrastructure for 3000+ developers. He also showed a nifty demo of starting, viewing, and managing instanced with a few taps on an iPhone.
SAP Adoption of Virtualization
Project VIM is the largest SAP internal development and test cloud with 3100+ users on about 2500 SAP systems. SAP suggests using the cloud systems for short lifetime, external facing, non-mission-critical projects.
Here’s a quick peek into the session.
