HR 2013 is almost here, and I’m really looking forward to the week. I know I’ll be just a little tired, but it will definitely be worth it. I’m speaking twice, once on Thursday, and once on Friday, but I know I can still get plenty of worthwhile presentations in my last two days.
On Thursday, I’ll be starting with a presentation by Chad Johnson, with “Tips for simplifying personnel actions for the HR Administrator” (Track 4). As the manager of the person who does nearly all the data entry for my company, I know how important it is to keep that person working efficiently and accurately. I’m also looking forward to a review of best practices with Personnel Actions. I think it’s simple enough to change if we aren’t using Personnel Actions effectively. As I have at other points, I’ll mention a couple of other speakers-Danielle Larocca from SpinifexIT, who I mentioned previously, and Tom Keebler from Towers Watson are both speaking at the same time. Tom does an excellent job of surveying various companies around the world and I’ve never been disappointed by any of his insights in past presentations.
After my first session, I’ll be attending “Affordable Care is coming! Is your benefits system ready?” by David Watts (Track 5). I’m aware that many of the employer changes required are just around the corner, and I want to make sure that
my company is ready for what’s coming. I especially like the idea of using standard configuration, as opposed to special programming.
Just after lunch, I don’t really get a choice-but I’m not complaining. I’ll be presenting my case study on adding new acquisitions to our company. I’m going to devote an entire blog entry to what I’ll be speaking about, and it will be repeated on Friday as well. Of course, I’m hoping that you’ll all be attending my session, but there will be other sessions with two speakers I highly recommend Tom Keebler and one with another one of my favorites Julie De La Torre.
After a quick breather, I’ll be attending “Case Study: How American Airlines ensures HR data security and integrity in its production, test and QA environments” (Track 4). As HR professionals, we all know that data security is important. It can also be difficult to balance that need for security against the need for developers to see either live or test data.
Finally, to close Thursday, it’s “The basics behind cross-application time sheet (CATS) and leave request in SAP enhancement package 5” (Track 5) by Arpit Nigram. I’ll be looking forward to seeing what’s new in CATS and seeing if those improvements can be brought to my company. Thursday night is a great chance to relax, as the Exhibit hall is closed. I know I’ll be getting to bed early that night and getting plenty of rest, so that I’m ready to go for the last of the sessions on Friday.
Friday doesn’t get nearly the respect it deserves at conferences, but I’ll let you know a little secret-it’s quite a bit less crowded, so you can get excellent sea
ts, get more questions answered and hey, you’ll still get lunch at the end of the day. Friday morning, I’ll be starting with “Guidelines for using SAP e-forms to mobilize HR processes and improve usability” (Track 3), by Chris Scott. It’s no secret that more and more of our employees are using mobile technology, and I really want to make sure we are keeping up with that technology. I also like the idea of improving our processes. This presentation will be a nice book end to several topics regarding process improvement. If you aren’t interested in this session, there’s still plenty of other choices, including one last chance to hear Danielle Larocca.
For my second and last educational opportunity on Friday, it’s “How to get more out of your standard HR reports”(Track 5) by Deepankar Maitra. I always get requests for more and better reports from my users, so I’m looking forward to seeing what Deepankar has to offer in ways to improve. I also like the concept of doing more with less, and it’s great to know that these recommendations come from standard reports.
I’ll be excusing myself from that last session to quickly prepare for the last session, a repeat of my previous session on Thursday. So if you missed it on Thursday, you have one last chance on Friday. Now, I do want to get a little gambling in, but my flight doesn’t leave until late on Friday, so it will be an excellent opportunity to leave on a high note, and talk to a few people who have questions about my topic-or anything really, I love to give my opinion!
My goal was to get sessions in 1, 3, 4 and 8. If you’ve been counting, I didn’t find anything in Track 1 that could pull me away from some of the other great sessions that I’ll be attending. But that does give me reason to come back for HR2014! Aggressive schedule? You bet! Will I be tired? That’s another sure bet. But will it be worth it-absolutely, I’ll be taking home a toolbox for of great tools that I can share with my co-workers.
