What Early Adopters of SAP Business Suite on SAP HANA Have to Say

SAP is now rolling out its in-memory computing platform SAP HANA to its core enterprise applications, SAP Business Suite, to help customers embed intelligence into transactions and allow for real-time planning and analysis scenarios. While SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA is still new to the market, many early adopters have already seen significant benefits from their investment.

Over the last few years, SAP’s powerhouse in-memory computing platform SAP HANA has began changing the way businesses interact with information. Companies can now analyze massive amounts of structured and unstructured data in seconds, giving them insight that was impossible to obtain even five years ago. For example, hundreds of companies have already combined SAP HANA with SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse (SAP NetWeaver BW), resulting in dramatically improved performance and reduced costs.

Now, SAP is rolling out this game-changing technology to its core enterprise applications — SAP Business Suite. The comprehensive suite of applications is designed to help companies run their businesses more efficiently and effectively.

By powering SAP Business Suite with SAP HANA, companies will be able to unify analytics and transactions into a single in-memory platform, thereby enabling them to rethink many of their critical business processes, allow for real-time planning and analysis scenarios, and embed intelligence into transactions for a more-informed workforce. 

SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA gives customers the ability to perform what-if simulations with live transactional data to make decisions in real time before potential troubles arise. Additionally, a 360-degree view of real-time information across all of the SAP Business Suite applications through desktop or mobile devices improves employee productivity and experience.

While SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA is still new to the market, many early adopters have already seen significant benefits from their investment. Of these customers, several have been publically vocal about their implementations, including Bayer MaterialScience, the Ferrero Group, HSE24, Lenovo, the Würth Group, and Deere & Company. Let’s explore these customers’ experiences using SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA.

Bayer MaterialScience Achieves Reduced Costs and an Improved User Experience

Bayer MaterialScience, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of high-tech materials, recently invested in SAP Customer Relationship Management (SAP CRM) powered by SAP HANA and, even in this early stage, has seen reduced costs and improved performance.

“After a successful proof of concept, we have quickly made the decision to implement SAP CRM powered by SAP HANA,” shares Kurt de Ruwe, CIO of Bayer MaterialScience. “We believe this is the right move for Bayer as it will allow us to innovate the way products are being developed by focusing more on the individual’s requirements rather than generic markets. We will also create a better user experience by providing our users with real-time information while reducing our overall operating cost in IT. The next logical step for Bayer will be to move the whole SAP Business Suite to SAP HANA.”

After implementing SAP CRM powered by SAP HANA, de Ruwe reports that the company has achieved a 20% reduction in IT and data analysis costs, with transactions now running 10 times faster.

Top-Notch Simulations Encourage the Ferrero Group to Look Toward the Future

The Ferrero Group, the manufacturer of chocolate brands including Nutella, Kinder, and Ferrero Rocher, is an early adopter of SAP ERP powered by SAP HANA. So far, the company is excited about the results and is already looking forward to future initiatives that include the in-memory platform.

“The goal for Ferrero in the next five years is to double the total turnover in the extra-European countries, and SAP will be a key part of the success for us,” says Enzo Bertolini, Group CIO of Ferrero. “The first impression of SAP ERP powered by SAP HANA is that we can obtain significant improvement in terms of speed and usability by working with real-time information. We expect clear benefits in trade promotions and the supply chain with better simulation and faster planning. The future, we imagine, is combining mobility with big data to transform the way we make decisions and manage our processes.”

After seeing the benefits of SAP ERP powered by SAP HANA, the Ferrero Group is considering other ways SAP HANA can empower the business. For example, IT Director of Ferrero Germany and Eastern Europe Martin Flegenheimer says the company is looking into the SAP CO-PA Accelerator, powered by SAP HANA, for real-time profitability reporting. “Chocolate consumption actually spikes when the economy isn’t doing so well,” says Flegenheimer. “And the SAP CO-PA Accelerator, powered by SAP HANA, could help Ferrero adjust to the change.”

Detailed Analyses Provide a Clearer View of Customer Needs at HSE24

HSE24, a leader in the home shopping market in Germany, implemented SAP CRM powered by SAP HANA because the company wanted more insight into customer buying habits. With its entire business based on customer wishes, managing the relationships with these customers is by far the most important business function for HSE24, and SAP HANA provides a way for the company to improve that crucial function.

“HSE24, a business of live sales channels, is very dependent on time. What we’ve seen is that we can get a complete picture of the customer in seconds with SAP HANA — including data coming from new sources like social media,” says Norbert Paulus, Executive Vice President of Broadcast and IT at HSE24. “We can now have more detailed analysis of our sales in real time, and deliver personalized offerings to customers while salespeople call for new cross- and up-sell opportunities. We want to continue to grow our sales in new countries. Having one real-time platform will be a key success driver for us to conquer the markets in the future.”

Real-Time Business Insight Allows Lenovo to Quickly Respond to Market Conditions

The ability to stay agile is imperative for businesses to survive in a constantly changing market. Multinational electronics company Lenovo had this goal in mind when deciding to power SAP CRM on SAP HANA to process over a million customer contract records with multiple attributes in less than a second.

“Knowing exactly what’s happening in our business at any moment and being able to respond quickly to changing market conditions is critical for the success of Lenovo,” says Lenovo’s Vice President Xiaoyu Liu. “SAP HANA has proven to be a high-performing platform to help us achieve this goal. That’s why we are exploring supercharging SAP CRM with SAP HANA. We’ve already seen 30 times faster performance in key processes during the customer validation phase. The first results are promising, allowing our business to get 360-degree real-time business insight and to significantly accelerate all of our customer-facing operations.”

The Würth Group Moves Past Limited Technology and Accelerates Processes

The Würth Group, a worldwide wholesaler of fasteners, screws, and screw accessories, had more than 60 databases for its SAP ERP landscape, and the company wanted to reduce its total cost of ownership. The business decided that running SAP ERP powered by SAP HANA would help reach this goal.

“We have a slogan at Würth — break your limits. That means we always want to get better and better every day. The reason we chose SAP is we are looking for technology that is scalable for a fast-growing company like Würth,” says Harald Holl, Head of Systems Technology, who is responsible for IT infrastructure and data centers at Würth. “The key value for the business is speeding up key processes, such as material requirements planning, order entry, and invoice management.”

With SAP HANA, Holl expects to simplify the SAP landscape, accelerate business processes, and provide innovation where previous, limited technology has held the company back.

SAP HANA Brings New Innovation to Deere & Company

Deere & Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of agricultural machinery, wanted to integrate real-time analytics into its business processes. Since the company is a long-time SAP ERP customer, turning to SAP HANA was an easy choice.

“We are extremely enthusiastic about SAP ERP now being powered by SAP HANA, as this move will be a game-changer for John Deere,” shares Derek Dyer, Director of Global SAP Services at Deere & Company. “We consider this major innovation from SAP as a new way to manage our business by revolutionizing the way we introduce new products and services to the market, drive critical processes such as material requirements planning in real time, and explore a new world where predictive maintenance becomes possible.”

Deere & Company has seen such promising results that the company is already thinking of where else SAP HANA will fit within the organization. “We needed real-time data, and SAP HANA has given us that,” Dyer says. “It is bringing new innovation to our business, and we made the decision to adopt SAP HANA as a platform of choice for many of our existing and future applications.”
