SAP and Partners Help Protect Your IT Investment and Provide Greater Choice in Uncertain Times

Günther Bader
New Business and Partner Development,

A very high percentage of mergers and acquisitions don't yield great benefit for shareholders, and an alarming number of them actually destroy value. How will the outcome of Oracle's acquisition of PeopleSoft and the takeover of Siebel turn out? It remains uncertain. Customers running PeopleSoft, JD Edwards, or Siebel applications are, understandably, concerned and confused about Oracle's software strategy, and many are actively looking to see if other vendors can provide stable and reliable alternatives.

SAP, together with third-party service providers in its robust SAP partner ecosystem, has launched the SAP Safe Passage Initiative, a comprehensive, low-risk program that provides customers with a smooth transition toward SAP business solutions. To protect existing IT investments, the program even extends credits against the applications that concerned customers currently have in house. The program provides:

  • A gateway to best-in-class business applications and tools for identifying new  business opportunities

  • A clear strategy, roadmap, and assessment service to make the move to SAP as smooth as possible

  • Competitive maintenance and support offerings from SAP and partners to protect existing IT investments and provide the flexibility to migrate and expand business processes

The SAP Safe Passage Initiative gives customers an unprecedented opportunity to reassess their application strategy and choose the options that are best suited to their company's needs.

The SAP Safe Passage Initiative gives customers the choice and flexibility to plan their maintenance and software migration strategies at their own pace. As part of the initiative, SAP and its partners provide comprehensive maintenance, application, and migration support. The program presents an outstanding opportunity for customers to discover the world's leading family of best-in-class business software applications.

Best-in-Class Business Applications

While Oracle and PeopleSoft focus their attention on the takeover, SAP continues to build the latest best practices and technology advances into its market-leading business software suite. Through the SAP Safe Passage Initiative, customers are introduced to the comprehensive range of solutions SAP offers to empower every aspect of business operations. SAP applications give customers:

  • The visibility to pinpoint inefficiencies — and the capabilities to transform them into competitive advantage

  • The foresight to identify new opportunities — and the agility to respond to changing business realities

  • The functionality to optimize customer operations — and the resources to extend best practices to their entire value chain

By using SAP solutions, organizations of all sizes can reduce costs, improve performance, and gain the agility to respond to changing business needs.

Strategy and Roadmap

When customers are ready to migrate to SAP, they can turn to the Safe Passage Initiative for a clear roadmap that guides them through the transition. The map starts with a detailed analysis of technical requirements and continues with special services — including an assessment workshop — to make the transition as smooth as possible.

To help customers understand the migration effort associated with Safe Passage, the assessment workshop gathers information and provides customers with a detailed proposal that includes migration costs, technical requirements, and timelines. The workshop also shows customers the different services specifically developed for Safe Passage, including risk analysis, conversion and migration services, and landscape optimization.

Once the migration is complete, SAP's open, underlying integration and applications platform — SAP NetWeaver — will allow companies to drive further business innovation by helping to create next-generation applications that keep pace with changing business requirements (see sidebar below). SAP NetWeaver, which powers the mySAP ERP solution, includes connectors for PeopleSoft and JD Edwards solutions — so customers can extend the life of their existing technology investments while enabling flexible business processes across the enterprise.

Spotlight on SAP NetWeaver

An integral benefit of migrating to SAP applications is the technical foundation underpinning SAP's solutions — SAP NetWeaver. A single, open technology platform that includes Business Intelligence, Exchange Infrastructure, and Master Data Management components, SAP NetWeaver allows processes to be rapidly designed, built, implemented, and executed across SAP and non-SAP applications.

Beyond extending the life of existing IT investments, SAP customers benefit from the ability to integrate their entire IT environment with one open platform and, as a result, create flexible, end-to-end business processes that span the entire organization. Migrating to SAP business solutions means that customers not only benefit from the powerful functionality the solutions contain, but also the technical foundation that underpins them.

Comprehensive Services and Maintenance Support from SAP and Partners

The SAP Safe Passage Initiative includes joint service and support offerings from SAP and partners, including:

  • Cost assessments, which show the business benefits of a single, integrated technology platform (SAP NetWeaver) and quantify the benefits of migrating to SAP solutions along key value drivers

  • Tools and services, tailored to unique customer needs, that reduce technical risks and costs in the implementation, upgrade, migration, and operation of SAP solutions

With an eye on long-term maintenance and helping protect customers' existing IT investments, SAP has acquired TomorrowNow, the industry's most experienced third-party support and maintenance provider for PeopleSoft and JD Edwards applications. As a result, SAP can offer competitive, long-term support through TomorrowNow for customers planning to migrate to SAP solutions.

Companies running PeopleSoft, JD Edwards, and Siebel solutions now have a safe passage to protect their IT investments. SAP's Safe Passage Initiative allows customers to concentrate on their business without worrying about the uncertainty and effects of the Oracle acquisition.

Partners play a key role in SAP's corporate strategy and the Safe Passage Initiative, as well. SAP has worked with partners to develop a strong community and provide customers with robust solutions and value-adding maintenance and support services.

With TomorrowNow, It's All About Choice

When Oracle acquired PeopleSoft, it seized control over PeopleSoft Enterprise, JD Edwards OneWorld, and JD Edwards World applications, turning these mature software lines and much of their underlying technology into legacy systems. This left more than 11,000 customers in the unexpected position of having to rethink their ERP strategy.

TomorrowNow enables these PeopleSoft and JD Edwards licensees to take back control of their ERP strategy, choose their future ERP vendors, and select their own timing for replacing their current ERP investment. TomorrowNow Support Services provides clients with the peace of mind that their current production environment will continue to run smoothly while they evaluate their ERP strategy. At the same time, they are assured savings of up to 50% on annual maintenance and support fees, which can be redirected toward new ERP applications.

Why Clients Choose TomorrowNow

Clients who choose TomorrowNow Support Services have two options:

  • Support only — PeopleSoft and JD Edwards licensees can move their support agreement to TomorrowNow at a 50% cost savings and select any replacement ERP solution at a time they choose.

  • Integrated approach with Safe Passage — Organizations that choose to replace their PeopleSoft or JD Edwards software with an SAP solution can get PeopleSoft and JD Edwards support from TomorrowNow while moving to an SAP landscape, immediately integrating their legacy systems using SAP NetWeaver and going live on an SAP solution at a time of their choosing.

TomorrowNow Support Services is an integral part of SAP's Safe Passage program.1 SAP's backing provides TomorrowNow with the stability of the world's largest ERP vendor, and yet leaves the long-term ERP decisions to the customers.

TomorrowNow enables PeopleSoft and JD Edwards licensees to take back control of their ERP strategy, choose their future ERP vendors, and select their own timing for replacing their current ERP investment.

One of our Safe Passage clients said the flexibility that TomorrowNow provided them in their project was critical to their success: "TomorrowNow Support Services was very attractive to us as part of the Safe Passage program," said Fred LaCroix, Systems and Programming Manager at Seattle Public Schools. "Our experience with TomorrowNow is very positive, and we are getting better support than we had before. This move has also relieved some of the time pressure on our current migration to mySAP ERP HCM as we are still running an older version of PeopleSoft."

More than 130 PeopleSoft and JD Edwards licensees have switched their mission-critical production support to TomorrowNow. We have highly experienced senior support engineers — in every region around the world — ready to provide support when our clients need it.

What Will Your Organization Do With the Money You'll Save?

TomorrowNow Support Services provides peace of mind, saves maintenance and major upgrade costs, and buys organizations the time they need to fully map out the most beneficial ERP strategy for their business.

Find out more about how TomorrowNow can play a cost-saving role in how you take control of your ERP strategy. Visit us on the Web at, or call us at +1 925 931-1350.

1 TomorrowNow Support Services contracts are offered separate from SAP Safe Passage to provide PeopleSoft and JD Edwards licensees with even more options.

Intervoice: A PeopleSoft to SAP Success Story

More than two decades of systems-integration and service-delivery experience and a rapidly growing installed-system base with more than 23,000 implementations worldwide have made Intervoice a market leader for converged voice and data solutions. Those same two decades, however, were also responsible for an IT environment that comprised numerous systems, including PeopleSoft, Oracle, and ADP.

Intervoice recognized the global advantage that consolidating on SAP solutions would bring to their business, but also understood the challenges of migration. Don Brown, Senior Vice President of HR at Intervoice, puts it plainly: "Nobody wants to go through a migration, but we were very concerned with HR being isolated on PeopleSoft and removed from the other parts of our business. Our people are an integral part of our strategy and our system requirements, and the metrics from that needed to be integrated into the corporate strategic vision."

Eliminating the Cost of Separate System Maintenance

Once Intervoice added up all the costs of maintaining PeopleSoft, it became clear that migration was necessary. "We found that the additional ongoing costs for a separate PeopleSoft system — including hardware, software, interface maintenance, upgrades, training, and technical personnel costs — were staggering," Brown continues.

Brown's concerns with the migration process went beyond the labor-intensive data extraction, mapping, and translations. He was unwilling to lose years of critical HR business data that the organization was built on. "SAP's human capital management (HCM) solutions wouldn't be fully leveraged if the employee data was in a separate reporting database like PeopleSoft. It needed to look like we'd always been on SAP," says Brown.

"We had used PeopleSoft for over 10 years. SAP would not be my human capital management solution today had it not been for my confidence in ERP Solutions and the ConversionSuite data migration software. ConversionSuite converted more than our data; it converted me from a loyal PeopleSoft guy to an SAP advocate!"

—Don Brown SPHR,
Senior Vice President of HR,
Intervoice, Inc.

Holding On to Crucial Historical Data

So Intervoice turned their attention toward selecting a partner that had experience in reducing the challenges of conversion. They found more than they were looking for. "Initially we were shocked at how few companies would attempt to convert historical data. Then we were surprised that ERP Solutions had more than just experience, they had a packaged solution," explains Brown.

"ConversionSuite from ERP Solutions allowed us to convert every piece of critical HR history: HR master data, organizational charts, pay history, promotions, appraisals…everything we wanted. Best of all, ConversionSuite required fewer consulting hours because it automated the conversion so it took half the time," says Brown.

About ConversionSuite and ERP Solutions

ConversionSuite is a packaged software solution that turns the process of moving legacy data to SAP systems into a simple configuration exercise with predefined templates. Built on years of experience, ConversionSuite combines Microsoft and SAP technologies with one user-friendly interface.

Accelerate Your Move to SAP Applications with Migration Solutions from Infosys

Recent consolidations in the ERP market have raised concerns for many organizations using ERP applications. In the wake of these mergers and acquisitions, companies are challenged to address some difficult questions:

  • What is the optimal ERP roadmap for our organization?

  • If we decide to move to another provider's ERP offerings, how can we do so with the least amount of disruption to our business?

  • How will we support our users after our ERP transition is complete?

Infosys's Enterprise Application Migration (EAM) solution, a packaged suite of consulting tools and services, helps organizations determine their optimal application roadmap and enables an accelerated, fully supported transition between enterprise applications — no matter what ERP systems your business currently runs.

Supporting the Transition to SAP Solutions

The EAM solution is based on a metadata-driven approach, and its framework and the tools it encompasses fully support customers as they migrate from one enterprise application to another. The solution also includes post-transition support services to ensure your end users seamlessly and successfully move to the new ERP application.

EAM — a solution well aligned with the Safe Passage program from SAP — is particularly helpful for organizations running on legacy ERP packages that are now planning to transition to SAP applications.

Founded in Bangalore in 1981, Infosys Technologies Ltd. provides consulting and IT services to clients around the world, helping companies plan and realize technology-driven, business-transformation initiatives.

What Exactly Is Included in EAM?

Infosys's EAM solution provides service and support offerings that can be categorized into three major phases (see Figure 1).

Figure 1

Infosys Provides an Accelerated, Comprehensive Services Package

1. Assess Your Current Landscape

Through Infosys's rapid assessment methodology and framework, our consultants conduct a series of evaluation exercises to help organizations arrive at an optimal application roadmap. The assessment consists of a preliminary diagnosis, aided by several accelerators such as interviews, workshops, and prebuilt questionnaires. The assessment phase focuses on understanding a company's key business goals and drivers, current landscape, business requirements, readiness for change, timelines, cost implications, and technology requirements to suggest the optimal organization-specific application roadmap.

2. Transform to Your New Solution

The transformation phase addresses the actual transition activities, using a multi-step approach:

Discover: To evaluate and understand a company's existing landscape and the ERP solutions within it, Infosys provides a tool called the Instance Analyzer. The Instance Analyzer quickly identifies and extracts any customizations in the existing source application. It automatically creates a list of customizations, custom-developed objects, database modifications, and any additional relevant references to them, saving time and mitigating risk for the actual application transition. The tool generates several reports on table references, menu paths, queries, and customizations that provide IT teams with all the relevant information they need to make quick decisions during the migration, such as which customizations should be retained or dropped, or whether data models and data mapping should change.

Design: Based on the results of the Instance Analyzer and an analysis of the target ERP application conducted by our experienced consultants, the design phase results in an in-depth repository of process maps, entity data maps, and control data maps of the ERP application design. This repository enables quick and accurate mapping of the current and target ERP applications. This rigorous study not only reduces the time required for mapping extensive business processes and vast data models, but also ensures accuracy, reduces risk, and significantly reduces time-to-implementation.

Implement: The implementation phase ensures that the required customizations, reports, and interfaces — not to mention data — are successfully moved over to the new application. Infosys offers a Data Migration tool that automates the migration of core-delivered data structures from the source to the target application. The tool is based on a repository of mapping formats, extraction logic, transformation rules, and programs to load the data, and includes detailed logs, error-handling capabilities, and reconciliation mechanisms. The Data Migration tool also enables organization-specific changes in data extraction, transformation, and loading to be incorporated easily (see sidebar below).

3. Support Your Worldwide Users

After your new ERP application is up and running, end-user support must remain a high priority. Over the last several years, Infosys has fine-tuned the processes involved in supporting application landscapes that extend across different countries. Developed over two decades, Infosys's Global Delivery Model (GDM) is a unique business model that stresses breaking work into its logical components and distributing these components geographically, so as to execute them where they will create maximum value. This model is ideal for supporting worldwide users of your enterprise applications. Infosys has also created a Global Shared Services Model similar to the GDM.

Features of the Data Migration Tool

Infosys's Data Migration tool, which considerably reduces the risk and time associated with migrating vital business data, includes:

  • Prebuilt data-mapping documents between current and target ERP applications, including reports, templates, and best practices

  • Ability to view the prebuilt repository details for modules and application version pairings, such as data-mapping formats, extraction logic, transformation rules, extracted output files, transformed output files, and relevant BAPIs

  • Ability to execute data migration automatically at the query, entity, business process, or project level

  • Provision to correct queries, scripts, and transformation rules for basic client-specific changes

  • Ability to view detailed logs during the transformation

  • Error-handling capabilities

  • Provision of verification and reconciliation mechanisms

The Value of EAM

Companies looking to transform from legacy ERP applications to SAP solutions will find that Infosys's EAM transformation solution provides:

  • Frameworks, methodology, and a structured, de-risked approach built to accelerate various project phases, such as application and data mapping

  • Robust tools that ensure quality and speed, enabling organization-specific changes to be incorporated with ease

  • Proven, client-specific change management and risk mitigation experience to simplify and accelerate the transition

  • Infosys's Global Delivery Model, which lowers TCO and enables organizations to focus on strategic business needs and enhance business value

Infosys is an SAP Service Partner in North America, Australia, and Japan. Infosys partnered with SAP in the Global Ramp-Up Program for SAP NetWeaver and was named a "Top SAP NetWeaver Certified Partner in APAC" by SAP in February 2005.
